STANDISH, ME - The Saint Joseph's College baseball
team improved to 27-6 (9-1 nac) with four important North Atlantic
Conference wins. On Saturday, the Monks swept Elms College (6-25,
2-8 NAC) with two 4-3 victories and went on to sweep Becker College
(14-15, 5-5 NAC) 3-2 and 1-0 on Sunday.
Sat., 4/22/06 - In game one against Elms, sophomore Dustin
Spiller (Gorham, ME) singled and scored in the second
inning, but Elms answered back with three runs in the fourth. The
Monks tied the game 3-3 in the fifth as junior Keil
Martin (Saco, ME) reached on an error and scored and
junior Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, ME) singled and
scored on a hit by Spiller.
St. Joe's recorded the game winner in the sixth
after sophomore Charlie Furbush (South Portland,
ME) tripled and scored on a single by sophomore Brian
Schools (Gorham, ME).
Junior Ben Cutter (Westbrook, ME)
struck out 5 batters in five innings for the Monks and Furbush took
the win, striking out 3 and allowing no hits in two innings.
Furbush (8-1) picked up another win in game two,
striking out 5 and allowing no hits in three innings. Senior
Steve Lambert (Gonic, NH) went five innings for
St. Joe's.
Freshman Wade Oliver (Owls Head,
ME) went 3 for 4 with a walk-off home run in the eighth to secure
the 4-3 win for the Monks.
Sun., 4/23/06 - Jack Hughes (Dudley, MA) (5-0)
struck out 10 and allowed just two hits in a 3-2 win over Becker
College.
The Hawks plated a run in the first, but the Monks
evened the score in the third as sophomore Luke
Enman (Milan, NH) singled to score Martin. St. Joe's added
to the lead in the fourth as Furbush scored on a double by Schools,
but Becker tied the score 2-2 in the fifth.
Sophomore Andrew Wood (South
Portland, ME) ended the game with a walk-off home run in the
eighth.
In game two, freshman Chris Leger
(Jaffrey, NH) (3-0) earned a 1-0 victory with 4 strikeouts and
Furbush recorded the save.
The lone run of the game was scored in the third as
Wood singled and went on to score on a single by Oliver.
The Monks travel to Bowdoin on 4/24 for a 4:00 p.m.
non-conference match-up.
