Monks and Cadets Play to Scoreless Tie

Standish, ME - Saint Joseph's College and Norwich University dueled to a scoreless tie in a GNAC Women's Soccer match Tuesday. The teams seemed evenly matched as neither defense was willing to break and allow a goal.

The Monks outshot the Cadets by a tally of 20-6, but the number of near misses by both teams was nearly equal. St. Joe's first opportunity to get on the board was in the 14th minute when FY Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) perfectly placed a corner kick that was headed by SO Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) and missed just wide. FY Jessica Needham (E. Bridgewater, MA) was stuffed 10 yards out by Cadets GK Nicki Hunsicker on a breakaway attempt in the 45th minute. The Cadets followed with perhaps their best opportunity of the game when Meghan Hoskins took a free kick that clanked off the crossbar over SO GK Katye Mayo (Fairfield, ME).

Norwich keeper Nicki Hunsicker made an amazing diving stop in the 79th minute on SO Lauren Hagerman (Scarborough, ME), who placed a booming kick towards the left corner from 15 yards out, to preserve the scoreless tie.

The overtime periods were full of back and forth action and great defensive play by both teams. The first scoring chance came in the 95th minute when the Monks FY Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) nailed a corner kick to the front of the net but FY Anna Flynn (Scituate, MA) just missed the scoring attempt over the crossbar. It was the Cadets' turn in the 99th minute when Meghan Hoskins attempted a free kick that was headed just wide of the net by teammate Dawn McNulty.

SO Brianna Jordan (Scarborough, ME) directed 5 shots on net in the match while teammates FY Mikayla Call (Portland, ME) and FY Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) had four shots apiece.

The Saint Joseph's College Women (15-1-2, 11-1-1 GNAC) host a Quarterfinal Playoff game, Saturday 10/27 at 1:00 PM. Opponent TBD.
