Orlando, FL - The St. Joseph's College baseball team won a pair
of games today against Curry College to push their season mark to
4-0. The Monks beat the Colonels 9-4 in game one, then used an 1-
hit attack to post a hard-fought 7-5 victory.
Junior catcher Andrew Wood (South Portland, ME)
remained hot in game one going 2-2 with 2 RBI, 2 stolen bases, and
a run scored. Senior DH Chris Doughty (Westbrook,
ME) chipped in 2 hits and an RBI.
Senior LHP Ben Cutter (Westbrook, ME) was
strong in his first outing of the year picking up the win. Cutter
went 5 innings allowing only 4 hits and striking out 2 Colonels.
Junior RHP Ryan Boucher (Manchester, NH) threw a
scoreless sixth inning in his first appearance in Royal Blue, and
Andrew Pooler (Southwest Harbor, ME) closed things
out in the seventh.
Game two was hotly contested, as the Monks jumped out to an
early 2-0 lead on an RBI single by Brian Schools
(Gorham, ME) to drive in Wade Oliver (Owls Head,
ME) who doubled to lead the game off. Junior SS Luke
Enman (Milan, NH) scored the second run on an RBI ground
out by Wood. The Colonels would not surrender, however, making it a
3-3 game after four innings. Junior CF Dustin
Spiller chipped in a 2-3 day including an RBI, he was
joined by senior Keil Martin who also went 2-3
with one driven in. The crucial blow came in the top of the fifth
as senior Mark Clapp came through with a 2-run
pinch-hit single to put the Monks on op 5-3. St. Joe's would tack
on single runs in the sixth and seventh to close out the scoring.
Sophomore RHP Chris Leger (Jaffrey, NH) started
game two on the mound going 3 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs on 4
hits, striking out 4. Leger gave way to sophomore LHP Cole
Filosa (Milford, MA) in the fourth. Filosa earned his
first collegiate win pitching out of several jams and keeping the
momentum on the side of SJC. He went 3 1/3 innings scattering 5
hits and allowing 2 earned runs and recorded 1 strikeout to end the
game and preserve the 7-5 victory.
Head coach Will Sanborn was pleased to see the Monks remain
undefeated. "I'm happy with the way we are swinging the bats right
now; we have gotten excellent contributions from Andrew Wood,
Dustin Spiller, Luke Enman, and a bunch of other guys so far. We
still need to work out a few kinks, but we are off to a good
start." Sanborn has also seen some impressive outings on the mound
thus far in 2007. "We have gotten 4 quality starts so far and that
is what we will need; we have a young pitching staff that has
responded well to some early challenges. There will continue to be
a lot of competition for innings, but I like what I have seen."
The Monks will look to win their fifth straight on Tuesday night
at 7:00 PM as they take on Daniel Webster College at the Disney
Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, FL.
