Cadets Slip Past Monks, 76-73

STANDISH, ME - SO Ray Eatmon (Huntington, NY) tallied his seventh double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 boards in a conference loss to conference opponent Norwich University on Saturday. St. Joe's falls to 11-11 overall and 9-6 in GNAC play.

The Cadets were ahead 23-12 after going on a 13-1 run that began nine minutes into the opening half. Freshman Jaren Jeffcoat (Dallas, TX) scored 6 points during the Norwich offensive surge.

SJC ended the first stanza with a 12-5 run that included 6 points from top scorer Ray Eatmon. SO Alberto Rue (Jamaica Plain, MA) connected on a three-pointer to bring his team within 3 points of the lead, 29-26, with 40 seconds left in the first. Jeffcoat capped the scoring before the break with a made free throw to put the Cadets up by four points going into recess.

The Monks would grab their first lead of the game, 32-30, in the opening minutes of the second half when sophomore Alonso Davis (Richmond, VA) converted on a layup after a steal and pass from teammate JR Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY). St. Joe's held onto the lead for the seven minutes before junior guard Tim Fico (Monroe, CT) drained his first of three 3-pointers in three minutes to help the Cadets go ahead, 52-50 with nine minutes remaining. Alberto Rue countered with a 3-pointer of his own to give the Monks a one point lead. SJC was unable to secure a lead as Fico's third trey during his hot streak put Norwich up by four points, 59-55, with seven minutes left.

St. Joe's managed to keep the game close by making 11 of 12 free throws attempts in the final minutes and trailed by two points, 73-71, with 16 seconds left after Alberto Rue made his sixth 3-pointer of the contest. Cadets senior Jerrold Williams (Norwalk, CT) made 3-4 charity stripe shots and Monks forward Ray Eatmon made a layup in the final seconds to close out the scoring in the contest.

For the Monks, Alberto Rue connected on 6 of 9 three-point attempts and scored 18 points, FY Chris Davis (New York, NY) added 12 points and Elbie Murphy tallied 13 points, 8 boards, 6 assists and 4 steals in the loss.

Jaren Jeffcoat paced four Cadets in double-digits with 21 points and made 9 of 10 free throw attempts. Jerrold Williams and Tim Fico each netted 14 points and JR Mike Filipek (Jericho, VT) tallied a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the victory.

St. Joe's will play GNAC opponent Mount Ida College in Newton, MA on 2/19. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 PM. Norwich will host conference opponent Suffolk University on 2/19 for a 7:00 PM start.
