Box Score

STANDISH, ME - Jessica Needham '11 (East Bridgewater, MA) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 50th minute to help lift top-seed Saint Joseph's (12-5-2) past #8 Norwich (8-10-1), 3-2, in the first round of the GNAC Women's Soccer Tournament at Westerlea Way Field on Sunday afternoon. With the win, St. Joe's advances to the semifinal round and will host #5 Simmons on Wednesday, time TBD. The loss signals the end of the Cadets' 2009 campaign.

Mikayla Call '11 (Portland, ME/McAuley) opened the game scoring off a beautiful pass from Elizabeth Theberge '11 (Danvers, MA) just 40 seconds after the opening whistle. Call received a lead pass from Theberge up the left side and dribbled toward the goal as Norwich keeper Alecia Wright '11 (Piffard, NY) left the net to challenge. Call proceeded to blast a shot past Wright off the right post and into the net to give the Monks an early 1-0 advantage.

Cadets midfielder Brittany Casey '13 (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) answered the SJC score less than six minutes later on an indirect kick attempt after an obstruction call. Ashley Sanford '10 (Holden, ME) touched the ball to Casey, who booted the ball past Monks keeper Katye Mayo '10 (Fairfield, ME) into the top left corner to tie the game.

St. Joe's took a 2-1 lead when Anna Willis '10 (Gorham, ME) netted a goal off a crossing pass from Call in the 12th minute of play. The one-goal cushion remained until Needham tallied her 11th goal of the year four minutes into the second stanza.

In the 85th minute, Norwich forward Nikki Szczepanski '11 (Auburn, NY) cut the visitor's deficit to one goal with an outstanding individual effort. Szczepanski started with the ball at the 50, dribbled through defenders and levied a blast from the right past Mayo into the bottom left corner. The Cadets did not challenge in the offensive end for the remainder of the match.

Wright recorded eight saves for Norwich and Mayo notched three stops for the Monks.
