Monks Fall to Huskies, 15-4

Box Score

PORTLAND, ME – University of Southern Maine (1-1) defeated Saint Joseph's (1-2), 15-4, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest at Deering Memorial Stadium on Thursday night. Junior goalkeeper Christopher Driscoll (Saco, Maine) recorded 10 saves for the Monks in a losing effort.

Rookie attackman Max Meserve (Kennebunk, Maine) netted a goal and a pair of assists in the loss while seniors Paul Dolewa (Saco, Maine), Jonathan Horgan (Hingham, Mass.) and Benson Pasquarello (Kennebunk, Maine) netted a goal apiece versus the Huskies.

Three of the Monks' markers were scored in man-up situations as Dolewa, Pasquarello and Meserve all tallied goals in a matter of two-and-a-half minutes late in the third quarter.

For USM, junior Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) and senior Nate Prince (West Gardiner, Maine) each scored five goals, junior Ryan Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) produced four goals and an assist, and senior Zach Blauvelt (Lewiston, Maine) won 18 of 22 face-offs and scooped up 18 ground balls.

Huskies junior goalie Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine) notched six saves over the first three quarters while his classmate, Ryan Hatch (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), posted three stops during the fourth quarter for the visitors.

White scored the first three goals of the game, followed by markers from freshman Dan St. Peter (Windham, Maine) and Prince, as the Huskies raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first 13 minutes.

Horgan got the hosts on the board before the end of the first quarter, but that would be the only goal of the first half for the Monks.  White and Foley (twice) would find the net in the second quarter as the Huskies pushed their lead to 8-1 by halftime.

Prince and Foley pushed the lead to 10-1 in the third quarter before St. Joe's scored three straight man-up goals to cut the Huskies' lead to 10-4. Southern Maine answered with five unanswered goals, including three by Prince, over the final 18 minutes to ice the victory – the first win for USM rookie Head Coach Sam Lane.

With the loss St. Joe's falls to 1-4 in the history of the series with University of Southern Maine. The Monks edged the Huskies by a 6-5 score last season – a game played on March 7th at Deering.

Saint Joseph's plays at FDU-Florham on Sunday at 1:00 PM while Southern Maine is off until March 17 when the Huskies travel to Maine Maritime Academy.
