Huskies Topple Monks, 19-3

GORHAM, ME – University of Southern Maine (3-3) defeated Saint Joseph's College (3-5, 2-0 GNAC), 19-3, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest at Hannaford Field Saturday afternoon.

The loss snaps a two-game win streak for the Monks while the Huskies increase their winning streak to three games. USM senior Kyle Baker (Kennebunk, Maine) led the hosts' balanced attack with three goals and three assists for six total points on the afternoon.

The Monks' goals were scored by junior Ahmed Dorghoud (Alexandria, Va.), sophomore Dalton Eldridge (South Gardiner, Maine), and freshman Jake O'Brien (Andover, Mass.).  Freshman Jeremy Sampsonis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) paced the visitors with six ground balls in a losing effort.

Saint Joseph's senior goalie Christopher Driscoll (Saco, Maine) was tagged with the loss giving up 11 goals and making six saves in 30 minutes of play. Monks sophomore netminder Ethan Rettew (Ephrata, Pa.) relieved Driscoll in the third quarter and gave up six goals while making four saves.  Sophomore keeper Jason Yasenchock (Rochester, N.H.) played the fourth quarter, giving up two goals and making one save in the closing frame.

Including Baker, four Southern Maine players tallied three goals in the game.  Senior Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) scored three goals and had two assists for five points, senior Kayle Hamilton (Buxton, Maine) netted three goals and contributed one assist for four points, and senior Dylan Kenney (Portland, Maine) added three goals of his own.  Kenney also led the team with eight ground balls, and senior Zach Blauvelt (Lewiston, Maine) won 15 of 19 face-offs.

Southern Maine senior goalie Ryan Hatch (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), earned the win making three saves and only giving up one goal in 30 minutes of play. Hatch is now 3-1 on the season. Freshman goalie Ryan Jurgelevich (Portland, Maine) came in for Hatch to start the third period and made four saves while giving up two goals.

The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Kenney 1:19 into the game, and made it 3-0 on a goal by Baker seven seconds later, and one from White at 6:42.  After O'Brien put the Monks on the board with 2:12 remaining in the quarter, Southern Maine rattled off 14 unanswered goals to push their lead to 17-1 with 4:42 to play in the third quarter.  Hamilton scored all three of his goals and Baker dished out his three assists during the run.

Saint Joseph's returns to action on Tuesday when the team travels to Colby College for a non-conference game starting at 7:00 PM. Southern Maine hosts non-conference opponent New England College on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
