Polar Bears Topple Monks, 11-6

Box Score

STANDISH, ME – Bowdoin College (12-6-1, 3-3 NESCAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (13-7, 4-0 GNAC), 11-6, in a non-conference baseball game at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman outfielder Cejay Suarez (Abington, Mass.) was 2-4 with a run scored in the loss, which snapped a five-game winning streak for the Monks.

Saint Joseph's held a 4-3 lead after three innings, but the Polar Bears managed to score three runs off three hits in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the contest. Bowdoin essentially put the game away with three additional runs off two hits and a costly SJC error on a double-play ball in the top of the sixth.

The Monks showed some signs of life in the bottom of the ninth when Louie Vigars (Stratham, N.H.) scored on a passed ball and freshman first baseman Brett Barbati (Melrose, Mass.) plated Taylor Reuillard (Biddeford, Maine) with a single to right field, but the rally – and the game – ended with an infield groundout.

Saint Joseph's employed six different pitchers on the afternoon, with freshman southpaw Thomas Fortier (Falmouth, Maine) making his first NCAA start, allowing three runs (two earned) off four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in three innings. Freshman Keenen Lowe (Westbrook, Maine) took the loss after surrendering three runs off three hits and a walk in an inning of relief and junior lefty Dan Meeken (Marshfield, Mass.) gave up a run off two hits while fanning a pair over one frame of work. Freshman Tyler Neville (Orono, Maine) yielded four runs (one earned) off two hits and a pair of free passes with five K's in two innings and southpaws Anthony Zawistowski (Otisville, N.Y.) and Chris Bryant (Gray, Maine) combined to allow three hits over two scoreless frames in the loss.

For the Polar Bears, junior shortstop Aaron Rosen (Morganville, N.J.) was 4-5 with three runs, two doubles and a stolen base, sophomore designated hitter Chad Martin (Rowley, Mass.) went 2-5 with three runs, a double and three RBI, sophomore right fielder Peter Cimini (Needham, Mass.) was 2-4 with a pair of runs, a two-bagger and three RBI and junior second baseman Erik Jacobsen (Milton, Mass.) added three hits and a run in six trips in the victory.

Sophomore starting pitcher Michael Staes (Salt Lake City, Utah) picked up the victory after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with a pair of K's while relievers Sam Herzig (Port Washington, N.Y.), David Zabinsky (Sharon, Mass.) and Jon Fraser (Marshfield, Mass.) combined to toss three innings of no-hit ball and senior Kevin McDonough (West Roxbury, Mass.) allowed two unearned runs off three hits in the ninth for the visitors.

Saint Joseph's hosts four conference contests this weekend, beginning with a twinbill versus Albertus Magnus College at 1:00 PM on Saturday. Bowdoin kicks off a two-day, three-game set with Colby College in Waterville on Friday at 3:00 PM.
