Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) netted a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead the Simmons College women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Saint Joseph's College (Maine) this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks improve to 2-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in GNAC play, while the Blue Jays fall to 1-3-0 and 0-1-0.

Gilbert put Simmons on the board in the 12th minute of play when classmate Victoria Russo (Braintree, Mass.) sent a lead cross that Gilbert corralled and beat the visiting keeper with a shot to the far post at 11:39. Gilbert's short cross in a crowd of defenders to sophomore forward Kashka Gammon (Nashua, N.H.), less than six minutes later, resulted in Gammon's second tally of the season at 17:09 for a 2-0 Sharks' margin. Simmons took a 3-0 lead early in the second half when junior back Tasha Friedman (Phoenix, Ariz.) served the ball from midfield and Gilbert redirected the cross, from inside the box, with a nifty flick of her foot into the back of the net. The marker was her third goal of the year and second of the afternoon at the 54:17 mark.

The Monks broke into the scoring column when senior back Whitney White (Salem, N.H.) found first year forward Haley DeGraca (Saco, Maine) for her first collegiate goal when she scored on an uncontested shot into the right post with 19:16 remaining on the contest. It was as close as Saint Joseph's could get as the Sharks held on for the victory.

Senior keeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) played the first 60:05 for Simmons and stopped all eight shots she faced to earn the victory, before senior Amber Verrill (Windham, Maine) played the final 29:55 and turned away five of six shots on net for the Sharks. Sophomore goalie Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made 12 saves for the Monks.

Simmons will be in action again on Tuesday, September 15 when it travels across the river to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Lesley University at 8:00 p.m., while Saint Joseph's hosts University of Maine Farmington on the same day at 4:00 p.m.
