Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Regis, 8-1

PORTLAND, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (5-1) defeated Regis College (2-2), 8-1, in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest at Deering Memorial Stadium on Wednesday evening.

THE LEAD

Saint Joseph's maintained possession for the majority of play, as evidenced by the hosts' 22-9 shots advantage, and sophomore Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) produced the brunt of the Monks' offense with five goals, including four in the first half.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S

  • Caiazzo scored five goals on eight shots with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Junior Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) produced three goals on four shots with three ground balls
  • Senior Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) tallied four assists, five ground balls, and four caused turnovers
  • Senior Emma Lafrance (Westport, Mass.) picked up six ground balls
  • Junior Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) added three draw controls, three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls
  • Senior goalie Michelle Cunha (Enfield, Conn.) made four saves, including three on free-position attempts, to improve to 5-1 on the season

LEADERS – REGIS

  • Senior Sam Salamone (Milford, Mass.) netted the Pride's lone goal, a man-up marker on a Sierra Luce (Hartford, Vt.) feed, with 4:59 remaining in the second half and also contributed six ground balls and three caused turnovers
  • Senior goalkeeper Emma Decker (Southborough, Mass.) made eight saves in the losing effort

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (22-9), ground balls (36-18), draw controls (7-3), and turnovers (23-29) while successfully clearing on 10 of 11 attempts on the evening. Regis was 13 for 27 on clear attempts in the loss.

NOTEWORTHY

Tonight's combined goals tally is the lowest in the history of the SJC women's lacrosse program…the previous low was 12 (7-5 win over Norwich, 4/24/14)…Saint Joseph's has now allowed one or fewer goals in five different games since becoming an NCAA varsity team in 2008…the Monks are 5-26 when scoring eight or fewer goals…Gadbois became the Monks' career ground balls and caused turnovers leader in tonight's win…the senior captain now has 232 ground balls and 107 caused turnovers over 63 career games, surpassing former teammates Rachelle Messuri '14 (230) and Lizzie Calnan '15 (104), respectively.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

Saint Joseph's is now 5-0 in the history of the series with Regis College, a team the Monks defeated by an 8-6 score in Portland last spring. Prior to this evening, all four of previous matchups between the Monks and Pride were decided by three or fewer goals.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's kicks off Great Northeast Athletic Conference play Saturday with a home contest versus Johnson & Wales University. Opening faceoff is slated for 1:00 PM at Deering Memorial Stadium.

Regis is off until next Tuesday when the team hosts Fitchburg State University in the Pride's 2016 home opener in a 5:00 PM start.
