Saint Joseph's Slips Past Bates, 4-2

LEWISTON, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (16-10, 6-2 GNAC) rallied past Bates College (10-13, 2-3 NESCAC), 4-2, in a non-conference baseball game on Wednesday afternoon.

THE LEAD

Trailing 2-0 through five frames, the Monks scored three runs off three hits in the top of the sixth and tacked on an insurance run with the help of two Bates errors in the seventh to account for the 4-2 final.

PITCHERS OF RECORD

  • Junior Thomas Fortier (Falmouth, Maine) picked up his first win of the season after allowing one run off four hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief
  • Freshman Grayson Jennings (Bedford, N.H.) fanned three and allowed a hit and a walk in two scoreless frames
  • Senior Corey McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) hurled two scoreless innings with four strikeouts to pick up his sixth save of the season
  • Bates senior Chris Ward (Pasadena, Calif.) took the loss and falls to 0-2 on the year after yielding three runs off three hits with three strikeouts in one inning of work
  • Bates sophomore starter Connor Russell (Cumberland, Maine) tossed five scoreless innings with four K's while giving up three hits and a pair of free passes, but did not factor into the decision
  • Bates relievers Justin Foley (Lynnfield, Mass.), Mark Cunningham (Canton, Mass.), and Samuel Warren (Norfolk, Va.) combined to throw three scoreless frames while yielding one unearned run off a hit and a walk with four punch-outs

SJC HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior shortstop Max McCoomb (South Berwick, Maine) went 2-3 with a pair of singles
  • Junior first baseman Brett Barbati (Melrose, Mass.) was 1-4 with a two-run single

BATES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Warren was 2-3 with two walks, a stolen base, and an RBI
  • Ryan McCarthy (Plaistow, N.H.) produced a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the fifth

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 33-14 in the history of the series with Bates College. The Monks faced the Bobcats three times last spring with two wins and a loss and has now defeated Bates in seven of the last 10 meetings between the in-state rivals.

Saint Joseph's hosts Anna Maria College Saturday in a GNAC doubleheader starting at 12:00 PM. Bates travels to Trinity College Friday for 3:00 PM contest and the first of three NESCAC games versus the Bantams.
