Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (2-6) suffered a 13-4 setback at the hands of Mitchell College (5-3) in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Friday morning.
The Monks trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the second and cut the deficit in half with two runs off three hits, including a run-scoring triple off the bat of senior Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.), but the Mariners answered with three runs off two hits and a pair of SJC errors in the top of the third to claim a 7-2 advantage.
St. Joe's remained within striking distance with single runs off a Matthew Martinello (Woodbridge, Conn.) sac fly in the fourth and an RBI double from Jonathan Dube (Rochester, N.H.) in the fifth, but the Mitchell bullpen managed to keep the Monks off the board over the final four innings to help the Mariners clinch the lopsided victory.
Junior right fielder Dylan Fournier (South Windsor, Conn.) was 3-4 with a double and an RBI, senior first baseman Simon Gonzalez (Peabody, Mass.) added two hits and a run in three at-bats, Gravel went 2-4 with two runs, a triple and an RBI, and Dube was 2-4 with a run, a double, and an RBI.
Senior starter Luke Klenda (Yarmouth, Maine) falls to 0-2 on the season after allowing seven runs (five earned) off seven hits and two walks with a pair of K's in two innings. Senior Troy Bogdahn (Hollis, Maine), sophomores Matt Soldano (Salem, N.H.) and Thomas MacGregor (Littleton, Mass.), and freshman Anthony Esposito (Orange, Conn.) also saw time on the hill in the loss.
Saint Joseph's returns to action tomorrow with a 5:00 PM game versus #15 Webster University.
