Regis Outlasts Saint Joseph's, 79-73

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College (3-4, 1-1 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (1-8, 0-2 GNAC), 79-73, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball action on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks either held a share of the lead or maintained a two-possession deficit until senior forward Marc Trinidad (Bronx, N.Y.) grabbed a loose ball and converted a layup to lift the Pride to a 40-32 advantage with 40 seconds before the break.

Trailing by 12 (47-35) with 18:10 left in the second stanza, the Monks rattled off a 22-1 run which was capped by a Griffin Foley (Portland, Maine) traditional three-point play as the visitors claimed a 57-48 lead with 11:33 remaining. Foley and senior guard Nicholas Curtis (Windham, Maine) netted 10 points apiece during the dominant stretch.

St. Joe's clung to the lead until Jalil Wilkerson (New Haven, Conn.) hit a three-pointer to knot the game at 70-70 with 4:11 on the clock and Joshua Perez (Lynn, Mass.) turned a steal into a fast-break layup 16 seconds later.

Freshman guard Teagan Hynes hit a free throw to cut the SJC deficit to 74-73 with 1:13 remaining, but the Pride went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe while holding the Monks scoreless in the closing minute to secure the conference victory.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Regis scored 23 points off 22 SJC turnovers and coughed up the ball just 12 times in the victory…The Monks shot 84.6% (11-13) from the free-throw line, but the Pride advanced to the stripe 32 times with 22 made for a 68.8% clip.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Foley netted 25 points with five rebounds and three assists
  • Curtis poured in 21 points with eight caroms and a pair of steals
  • Junior Drew Shea (Mount Desert Island, Maine) chipped in with nine points, five boards, and a pair of assists

LEADERS – REGIS:

  • All five of the Pride starters scored in double-digits with freshman Russell Rau (Fitchburg, Mass.) netting 17 with six boards, two assists, and a pair of blocked shots
  • Trinidad added 16 points and eight rebounds
  • Wilkerson chipped in with 15 points and three assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 4-1 all-time versus Regis College.
