Mules Rally Past Monks, 5-3

Box Score

WATERVILLE, Maine - Colby College (2-1) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Saint Joseph's College (6-9), 5-3, in a non-conference baseball contest on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks secured a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when sophomore shortstop Zach Miles (Concord, N.H.) singled and scored on a Hunter Richardson (North Monmouth, Maine) base hit. St. Joe's proceeded to claim a 3-0 cushion with two runs off a hit and a Colby error in the third inning, when Miles and Richardson crossed the plate on a fielder's choice and a misplayed ball after reaching with a walk and base hit, respectively.

Unfortunately for the Monks, the 3-0 lead dissipated entirely in the bottom of the fifth when the Mules scored three runs – all unearned – of a pair of hits with a Brady O'Brien double knotting the game at 3-3.

After stranding two runners in both the sixth and seventh innings, St. Joe's gave up the lead without allowing a hit in the bottom of the seventh, when Patrick McConnell walked, moved to third following a balk and a wild pitch, and scored on a sac fly off the bat of Andrew Russell.

The Mules capped the game scoring in a similar manner in the bottom of the eighth, when Cabot Mahar walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and sprinted home on another errant pitch.

ON THE MOUND:

  • Freshman starter Luke Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) did not factor into the decision after yielding three unearned runs off four hits and a pair of walks with six K's in 4.2 innings
  • Freshman reliever Brian Berthiaume (New Boston, N.H.) allowed two runs and suffered the loss despite tossing 3.1 no-hit innings with eight strikeouts
  • Colby employed six different hurlers in the victory with Maher earning the win after fanning five during 2.2 perfect innings

OFF THE BAT:

  • Richardson was the game's lone repeat-hitter and went 2-3 with a run and an RBI
  • Stephens was credited with a pair of RBI in the setback
  • For Colby, McConnell was 1-2 with two runs and an RBI while O'Brien and Maher both recorded a double
