Monks Kick Off 2022 Season with Convincing Victory

STANDISH, Maine – Graduate student Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) tallied four goals and four assists to help Saint Joseph's College (1-0) kick off the 2022 women's lacrosse season with a 20-4 victory over Maine Maritime Academy (0-1) on a chilly Saturday afternoon at the SJC Athletics Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks opened the game with three goals in the first minute, as sophomore Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) netted the Monks' first marker of the year off a Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) assist at the 14:30 mark. Teegan Gilreath (Lowell, Mass.) hit pay dirt 19 seconds later and second-year Cailyn Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) gave the hosts an early 3-0 cushion with a free-position tally.

Saint Joseph's rattled off eight unanswered goals during the remainder of the first quarter and opened up a 12-0 lead when Dexter led off the second stanza with her third tally of the afternoon with 9:44 before the break.

The Mariners finally found the scoreboard with 7:23 left in the second quarter when freshman Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) scored on a free-position attempt.

THE KEEPERS:

The Monks split time in the cage as freshman starter Jenna Shutt (Holliston, Mass.) earned the win after making a pair of saves in the first half and Mackenzie Baston (Gray, Maine) stopped a pair of bids in the second half.

MMA sophomore starter Charlotte Rose (Newark, Del.) posted four saves in 54:35 between the pipes and freshman Sadie Velozo (Greene, Maine) notched one save in 5:25 of relief.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Battaglia added three goals, nine draw controls, and two ground balls
  • Sophomore Megan Mourmouras (Biddeford, Maine) chipped in with two goals, an assist, and two draw controls
  • Collins tallied two goals, two assists and a pair of ground balls
  • Freshman Brianna Paul (Brattleboro, Vt.) scored twice and added an assist
  • Wesley scored a pair of goals and collected two draw controls
  • Freshman Shauna Clark (Oakland, Maine) potted two goals and added an assist

LEADERS – MAINE MARITIME:

  • Stoddard scored three of the Mariners' four goals and added five draw controls, two ground balls, and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Junior Beth Labbe (Brunswick, Maine) also scored for the visitors
  • Sophomore Darby Cendoma (Livonia, N.Y.) chipped in with four ground balls

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 4-0 in the history of the series with Maine Maritime Academy.
