Saint Joseph's Falls to Moravian in Florida, 18-11

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Moravian University (1-1) defeated Saint Joseph's College (0-3), 18-11, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest at Northeast Regional Park on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Moravian opened up a 4-0 lead in the first six minutes of play and extended the advantage to 9-1 after senior Griffin LeBlond (Branchburg, N.J.) netted a man-up marker with 9:12 left in the second quarter. The Monks proceeded to score four of the next six goals, as junior Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) capped the first half scoring with an unassisted goal and the Royal Blue trailing, 11-5.

The Greyhounds increased their cushion to 14-5 with three strikes in the opening seven minutes of the third quarter, but the Monks remained within striking distance by netting three of the subsequent four goals with sophomore Timothy Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) making it a 15-8 game with 9:57 left in the fourth frame.

St. Joe's would get no closer on the scoreboard however, as the unfamiliar foes essentially swapped scores for the rest of the game with Moravian securing the 18-11 triumph.

TEAM STATS:

Moravian held the lead in shots (50-27), shots on goal (32-15), ground balls (53-25) and face-off victories (25-7) on the afternoon.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC starter Ryan Boutiette (Burrillville, R.I.) posted eight saves over 45 minutes and senior Michael Janocha (Southampton, Mass.) turned away six shots in 15 minutes of relief duty.

For Moravian, junior netminder Sean DeMott (Wall, N.J.) recorded four saves in a complete- game effort.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Goodfellow led the SJC offensive attack with three goals
  • Junior Noah Tierney-Honan (Dracut, Mass.) added two goals and a pair of ground balls
  • Freshman Calvin Heline (Amesbury, Mass.) netted a pair and dealt an assist
  • Junior Max Lacy (Salisbury, N.H.) scored and tacked on two assists
  • Senior Wyatt LeBlanc (Arundel, Maine) tallied a goal and two assists
  • Junior Eli Arsenault (Saco, Maine) chipped in with an assist, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers

LEADERS – MORAVIAN:

  • Senior Connor James (Piscataway, N.J.) scored five goals with three assists and four ground balls
  • Sophomore Trevor Dzama (Livingston, N.J.) added a goal, seven assists, and four ground balls
  • LeBlond netted three goals on three shots
  • Grad student Tyler James (Piscataway, N.J.) was 25-for-31 on face-off attempts and picked up 17 ground balls
  • Junior Shane Cassel (Harleysville, Pa.) added seven ground balls and a caused turnover
