Leopards Tip Monks, 15-14

Box Score

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (0-4) suffered a 15-14 loss at the hands of Wentworth Institute (3-2) in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest played at Northeast Park in Davenport, Florida on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks opened the game with goals from Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) and Max Lacy (Salisbury, N.H.) in the first six minutes, but the Leopards netted four of the following five tallies and headed into the second quarter with a 4-3 edge.

Wentworth opened the second stanza with three unanswered strikes as a Logan Maklan goal provided the Leopards with a 7-3 lead with 9:48 before the break. Timothy Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.), Lacy and Noah Tierney-Honan (Dracut, Mass.) all hit pay dirt for the Monks in the seven minutes leading up to halftime to make it an 8-6 game at intermission.

The third quarter featured a frenzied pace as 10 goals were scored – five by each team – as the Leopards clung to a 13-11 cushion going into the final frame.

Wentworth scored two of the opening three fourth-quarter goals as a Sam Prunier tally gave the Leopards a 15-12 lead with 6:57 left. Saint Joseph's mounted an impressive rally in the closing five-plus minutes, an effort that began with a man-down goal from Tierney-Honan at the 5:22 mark.

Back-and-forth play ensued, as SJC junior goalkeeper Brannon Gilbert (Gray, Maine) made several big saves to preserve the two-goal deficit. With 45 seconds remaining, sophomore Timothy Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) scored off a Ryan Bogdanski (Southington, Conn.) pass to make it a 15-14 game, but the Monks' comeback bid fell short, as Wentworth won the subsequent face-off and ran out the remainder of the game clock.
