Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (18-17) claimed a pair of wins over UMaine-Farmington (5-27) in a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Wednesday afternoon. The Monks opened with a 3-1 triumph and completed the sweep with a 14-6 victory.

SAINT JOSEPH'S 3, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 1:

All four of the runs in the opener were scored in the first three innings, as SJC freshman center fielder Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, Conn.) led off the bottom of the first with a triple and sprinted home when the following batter, Jack Moltenbrey (East Longmeadow, Mass.), grounded out to third base.

The Beavers tied the game in the top of the second when sophomore Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) scored on a Sam Peterson (South Berwick, Maine) single, but in the bottom of the third Wilhelm launched a solo home run and Moltenbrey raced home on a Matt Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) single to complete the game scoring.

ON THE MOUND:

SJC freshman starter Padraig Mac Seain (Brookline, N.H.) picked up his second win of the season after allowing one run off six hits and two walks with a pair of K's in 5.2 innings. Freshman Ethan Smith (Hudson Oaks, Texas) retired the only batter he faced in the sixth and senior reliever Sean McDonough (Concord, N.H.) earned the first save of his career after giving up one hit in an otherwise perfect seventh inning.

UMF sophomore starter Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks with two punchouts in six innings.

OFF THE BAT:

  • Wilhelm was 2-3 with two runs, a triple, a home run, and an RBI
  • Moltenbrey  went 2-3 with a run and an RBI
  • Senior Jackson Stanton (Saugus, Mass.) added two hits in three at-bats
  • For UMF, seniors Hunter LaBossiere (Oxford, Maine) and Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) notched two hits apiece

SAINT JOSEPH'S 14, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 6:

The Beavers struck first in the nightcap as junior first baseman Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) knocked in Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) with a single in the top of the first.

Starting with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, Stanton delivered the Monks' first five runs as the senior catcher went yard again with a three-run blast in the bottom of the third. St. Joe's proceeded to plated three more runs in the third, as junior Dawson Gundlah (York, Maine) notched an RBI double and scored on a Michael Wearne (Ellington, Conn.) single to help the hosts secure an 8-1 cushion.

Saint Joseph's put up six more runs in the bottom of the fourth to claim a 14-1 advantage. Freshman Terry Morrissey (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Logan Dee (Laconia, N.H.) belted two-run doubles and freshman Anthony Chiappone (Orrington, Maine) ripped an RBI two-bagger to put the game out of reach.

UMF junior catcher Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) launched a three-run homer in the top of the fifth and Coombs and junior Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) registered RBI base hits in the sixth to account for the 14-6 final.

ON THE MOUND:

The Monks featured seven different pitchers in the triumph with junior Logan Butkins (Scituate, R.I.) earning his first career victory after tossing a pair of hitless innings in relief. The sophomore righthander entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the third and worked out of the jam without allowing a run.

Samuel Jalbert (Mascouche, Que.), Matthew Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.), Kyle MacKay (Dracut, Mass.), Ben Fargo (Charlestown, R.I.), Cam Wodarski (Danvers, Mass.), and Andrew Keniston (Center Ossipee, N.H.) all logged time on the mound in the lopsided victory.

UMF junior starter Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Relievers Anthony Boyle (Wallingford, Conn.) and Jameson Bloch closed out the setback after combining to toss 2.1 scoreless innings.
