Monks Topple Blazers, 83-51

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (8-9, 4-2 GNAC) toppled Elms College (3-15, 1-5 GNAC), 83-51, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's maintained the lead for all but the opening two minutes and utilized an early 12-3 run, capped by a Teagan Hynes (York, Maine) three-pointer, to claim a 16-6 lead with 12:28 left in the first frame. Elms managed stay in the game and trailed by nine points (28-17) after Kishaun Cole hit a three with 4:35 before the break, but St. Joe's punctuated the opening period with an 11-4 run en route to building a 39-21 cushion going into intermission.

The Monks proceeded to hold a 20-point lead for the remainder of the contest and led by a game-high 35 points (81-46) after senior guard Max Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) made a three-pointer with 1:31 left to play.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Saint Joseph's shot 51.6% (32-62) from the floor while Elms posted a 27.7% (18-65) from the field…The Monks outrebounded the Blazers by a 45-27 margin and notched a 38-16 lead in points the paint.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Sophomore forward Wani Donato (Portland, Maine) netted 19 points with nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots while shooting 8-for-11 from the floor
  • Grad forward Ashtyn Abbott (Farmingdale, Maine) registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards
  • Sophomore guard John Paul Frazier (York, Maine) added 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists
  • Freshman guard Kolbyn Dunphe (Westbrook, Maine) chipped in with five points, six rebounds, four assists, and a pair of blocked shots
  • Hynes scored nine points with three assists and three steals
  • Sophomore guard Ben Seiler (Enfield, N.H.) came off the bench to added six points, two rebounds, and a pair of assists

LEADERS – ELMS:

  • RJ Mayfield paced the Blazers with 14 points
  • Edgardo Jacob Cancel tallied 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists
  • Cole came off the bench to score five points in eight minutes

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

The Monks are now 4-0 in the history of the series with Elms College.
