Monks Fall to Rams in Thomas Tip-Off, 54-47

WATERVILLE Maine –Suffolk University (2-0) surged past Saint Joseph's College (1-1) 54-47, in a non-conference women's basketball contest at the Thomas Tip-Off on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks opened the game ahead by five putting the Rams in a five-point hole fie minutes into the game. The Monks finished the first quarter ahead by three. The Rams dominated the second stanza– with the help of a – and headed into intermission with a 33-23 lead.

In the second stanza the Monks stretched the margin back to five, 19-5.

SJC netted first hoop of the third quarter, but Suffolk controlled things from there to build a 29-24 advantage. That 5-point margin remained when Bono knocked down her second trey of the day, but four quick points by the Monks closed out the frame to reduce the gap down to 11, 44-33. 

The Monks put together a 4-1 run in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to cut the distance down to single digits 45-37 with just under seven minutes left on the clock.  

Saint Joseph's continued to ready a comeback and cut Suffolk's lead down to three, 50-47, with 45 seconds to go. 

The Rams clinched the victory as Guinta went 4-for-4 at the line over the final 11 seconds to push the blue-and-gold to the 54-47 victory. 

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Hurley netted 13 points with eight rebounds and three steals
  • Junior Grace Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) contributed three points and eight rebounds
  • Junior Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) chipped in with 10 points and a seven rebounds

LEADERS – SUFFOLK:

  • Guinta finished with a game-high 19 points behind a 6-for-15 
  •  Amanda DeAngelis added 10 points, six caroms, four takeaways, one assist and one block
  • Bono produced 13 points with four rebounds and three steals. 
  • Moreau scored nine points and added three rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. 

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

  • The Rams defeated the Monks for the second straight meeting. The last time Suffolk coupled a pair of wins together against Saint Joseph's (Maine) was in 2013.
  • Suffolk is now 9-14 all-time against SJC. 
  • On neutral hardwood, the Rams are now 1-1 versus the Monks.
