CASTINE, Maine – Saint Joseph's Women's Basketball (5-4 0-1) fell to the Maine Maritiime Mariners (6-2, 0-2)
71-63 on Saturday afternoon. The Monks lead the all-time series 12-5, but the Mariners have won the last three meetings.
How it Happened:
The Monks took an early 10-5 lead in the first quarter with buckets from Grace Ramsdell and Angelica Hurley but ended the quarter tied with the Mariners.
The Monks and Mariners battled for the lead in the second quarter but the Mariners took control, taking an eight point lead into the third quarter.
The Monks cut the deficit to four points by the end of the third quarter. In the third quarter, the Monks bettered their shooting percentage, improving from 27.27% in the second quarter to 41.67%. Although the Monks upped their offensive efforts, the Mariners retained the lead finishing the third quarter ahead by one.
With the Monks down by 1, Elisabeth Stapelfeld netted the first basket for the Monks early in the fourth with Grace Ramsdell scoring the tying basket shortly thereafter. The Monks were unable to catch up to the Mariners despite their efforts.
Leaders-SJC:
- Junior Grace Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) scored a game-high 19 points on the strength of making 8-of-9 free throw attempts
- Graduate Student Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Massachusetts added 17 points and led the Monks with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals
- Sophomore Maddie Russell (Oakland, Maine) added seven points and one steal
- Junior Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, NH) contributed 6 points
Leaders-Maine Maritime:
- Sydney Briscoe made 7-of-10 field goal attempts and grabbed a game-best nine rebounds.
- Erianna Moore led all playmakers with six assists and chipped in six rebounds.
