Montclair State Defeats Saint Joseph's, 18-8

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Montclair State University (2-1) defeated Saint Joseph's College (3-2), 18-8, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Red Hawks held a 5-0 lead before senior Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) scored off a Celia Melanson (Waterford, Maine) pass with 5:10 left in the first quarter. Sophomore Sophia Burton (Westtown, N.Y.) and Collins both found the back of the net off Mackenzie Siebert (Naples, Maine) passes in the last two minutes of the opening period to make it a 6-3 game going into the second stanza.

Montclair State dominated the second quarter and outscored St. Joe's by a 6-1 margin leading up to halftime and held a 12-4 advantage at intermission. Trailing 17-5 at the start of the fourth frame, the Monks netted three of the game's final four goals – including a pair from Siebert – to account for the 18-8 final score.

TEAM STATS:

Montclair State held the lead in shots (29-21), caused turnovers (20-12), draw controls (17-13), and ground balls (29-12) while both teams steered 20 shots on goal in the non-conference tilt.

THE KEEPERS:

Sophomore Alexis Eldridge (Effingham, N.H.) made a pair of saves in the first half while junior Morgan Wright (Chelmsford, Mass.) allowed seven goals without a stop in the second stanza. Montclair State netminder Joey Grotkopf made 12 saves over 60 minutes.
