STANDISH, Maine – Albertus Magnus College (6-14, 4-6 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (5-15, 2-4 GNAC), 8-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball contest at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Albertus Magnus opened the scoring with a run on three hits in the top of the second before the teams endured a lengthy rain delay during the bottom of the inning. Freshman catcher Tyler Czeremcha (New Britain, Conn.) lifted the Falcons to a 3-0 lead with a two-run double in the top of the fourth.

The Monks got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when junior Alex Moore (Henniker, N.H.) and freshman catcher Brady Cabral (Fall River, Mass.) hit back to back doubles.

Albertus tacked on another run in the top of the sixth when freshman Troy Piascik (East Haven, Conn.) doubled and scored on a Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) base hit.

The Falcons capped the scoring in the top of the seventh when junior first baseman Shawn Smith (Shelton, Conn.) belted a three-run homer to deep left-center and Eric Galarza (Bridgeport, Conn.) raced home on a fielder's choice.

ON THE MOUND:

SJC grad starter Matthew Bergeron (Salem, N.H.) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Senior reliever Matt Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) yielded three runs on two hits – including the Smith homer – with a pair of strikeouts while junior Hugh Barrett (Durham, Conn.) and freshman Josh Wieners (Duxbury, Mass.) combined to toss 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with the latter fanning three batters.

Albertus freshman starter Albert Molina (Terryville, Conn.) allowed a run on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in a complete-game performance.

OFF THE BAT:

• Senior left fielder Dawson Gundlah (York, Maine) was 2-4 with a double
• For the Falcons, Piascik went 5-5 with two runs and three doubles, Czeremcha knocked in four runs, and Smith, Galarza, and Arent posted two hits apiece

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 29-3 in the history of the series with Albertus Magnus College.
