MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – Anna Maria College (12-16, 5-6 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (5-16, 2-5 GNAC), 5-2, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball contest on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

All seven runs in today's game were scored in the first three innings as the AMCATS parlayed an SJC error into a run in the first inning when first baseman Jeremy Rosenberg roped an RBI single. The Monks tied the game in the top of the second when senior Luke Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) singled and later scored on a Matt Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) double.

As it played out, Anna Maria took the lead for good with three runs on three hits and another St. Joe's error in the bottom of the second. Rosenberg and Tommy Sasso notched RBI singles during the hosts' second turn at the bat.

The Monks got a run back in the top of the third as junior Michael Wearne (Ellington, Conn.) doubled and eventually crossed the plate on a Stephens base knock, but the AMCATS responded in kind with another run in the bottom of the inning when Jarryn Barber doubled and came home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Sasso.

Anna Maria produced only two baserunners during the remainder of the game and Saint Joseph's had the tying run at the plate with two out in the top of the ninth, but the AMCATS escaped the jam with a flyout to center.

ON THE MOUND:

Junior Liam Jann (Philadelphia, Pa.) served as the opener and allowed an unearned run in one inning of work before sophomore Dylan Brander (Merrimack, N.H.), who suffered the loss, yielded four runs (three earned) on four hits in three innings. Sophomore southpaw Padraig Mac Seain (Brookline, N.H.) tossed four one-hit innings in relief.

Anna Maria starter Michael Shorey improved to 4-4 on the season after allowing two earned runs on 12 hits and two walks with three strikeouts in a complete-game performance.

OFF THE BAT:

  • Wearne went 2-5 with a double and a run scored
  • Stephens was 2-4 with a run and an RBI
  • Sophomore catcher Michael Richards (Melrose, Mass.) went 2-3
  • Brander added two hits in five at-bats
  • For Anna Maria, Rosenberg went 2-4 with two RBI and Andrew Denison was 2-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss Saint Joseph's falls to 20-6 all-time versus Anna Maria College and has now dropped three consecutive games to the AMCATS.
