Saint Joseph's College Chief Athletics & Recreation Officer Will Rothermel is pleased to announce thatÂ
Matt Gilbert has been named as the Head Coach of the Men's Lacrosse Program.
"We are thrilled to retain Coach Gilbert in this elevated position to lead our men's lacrosse program at Saint Joseph's moving forward," adds Rothermel. "He has played an integral role in building the culture of the men's lacrosse program, and we are excited to see where it ascends under his capable leadership!"
Gilbert, the fourth coach in SJC men's lacrosse history, replaces Bill Cosentino, who transitioned to a new role as the Senior Director of Recruiting and Undergraduate Admissions for Saint Joseph's College this summer after serving as the Monks' skipper for eight years. Gilbert, a native of Litchfield, Maine, has been deeply involved in the sport as both a coach and a player.
Gilbert rises to Head Coach after having spent the last four years as the Associate Head Coach for the men's program. Since arriving at Saint Joseph's prior to the 2020 campaign, Coach Gilbert has helped the Monks post a 33-33 overall record with a 21-13 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. With Gilbert playing a larger role on the coaching staff in the spring of 2023, becoming offensive coordinator, St. Joe's showed great improvement with a 10-8 overall record, including an 8-2 docket in GNAC play, after posting a 5-13 slate with a 3-7 GNAC mark in 2022.
"I am incredibly honored to be named the next Head Men's Lacrosse Coach at Saint Joseph's College. St. Joe's has given me such a great opportunity to be a part of this program for the last 5 years. I'm eager to contribute to this program in a new capacity. We have such a strong foundation to continue to build upon and I know the men are eager to get to work," adds Gilbert. "I want to thank Coach Cosentino for not only the immense amount of time and dedication he's given to the program, but for providing me the opportunity to have a real ownership in the program, developing my voice as a leader, and for investing in me professionally over the years. I will miss having such a great friend on the sideline. We're looking forward to making him proud of where the Monks are headed. I also want to thank St. Joe's, Will Rothermel, our players, alumni, and our families for supporting me as we move forward together."
Gilbert has an extensive coaching background, having served as a coach for 4Leaf Lacrosse since 2021 and previously coaching the Maine Mussels Lacrosse Club from 2017 to 2021. He was the Head Coach at Brunswick Jr. High from 2018 to 2020 and an Assistant Coach for Brunswick High School Varsity Lacrosse from 2017 to 2019, during which time the team won the Maine State Championship in 2017 and 2018. Additionally, Gilbert was the Director and Coach for Oak Hill Youth Lacrosse from 2016 to 2018.
Coach Gilberts leadership has earned him 3-time NEILA East-West All Star Game Coach selection, having been chosen in 2021, 2023, and this past 2024 season.
