FORT MYERS, FL - Saint Joe's (5-1) knocked off Curry College 2-0
at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Florida today. St. Joe's
held off a tough Curry squad that went 38-6 last season and had
started the season undefeated.
Winning pitcher senior Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) recorded
her first shut-out of the season with the help of a tremendous St.
Joe's defensive effort. After 6 scoreless innings, the Lady Monks
went to work in the top of the 7th inning.
Senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) singled and first year Deb Drown
(Gorham, ME) moved Lee over with her second sacrifice bunt of the
game. Sophomore Jamie Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) singled and Lee
moved to 3rd base. Daugherty stole second and junior Leanne Morton
reached first on a fielder's choice as Lee was thrown out at the
plate.
Sophomore Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) singled and Daugherty scored
the winning run. Ferguson reached on an error and Morton scored the
insurance run.
In the bottom of the 7th, Morton robbed Jackee Joyce of a sure
single with a quick grab and a put-out. Senior Kahler Downling
(Augusta, ME) made a spectacular over the shoulder catch at the
fence for the second out of the inning. Amanda Roy handled a
routine fly ball for the final out of the game to hand Curry its
first loss of the season.
