GORHAM, Me. - USM senior pitcher Katie Mainville
(Coopers Mills, ME) kept the St. Joe's bats quiet, striking out 14
en route to a 2-0 win in game 1.
First year Gabrielle Burrola
(Gallup, NM), 3-5, gave up only 3 hits to the Huskies in the first
4 innings and the game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth
when USM notched two more hits.
The Huskies scored on a two-out two-run single from
sophomore Dawn Ross (Gray, ME). St. Joe's managed just two base
runners in the game as first year Colby McKenney
(Saco, ME) and junior Jaime Daugherty (Bass
Harbor, ME) both drew walks.
In game 2, first year Kristi
Albert (Farmingdale, ME) reached on a lead-off single and
was advanced by a McKenney sacrifice bunt, but USM freshman pitcher
Bree Loon (Jay, ME) struck out first year Kim
Bechard (Lewiston, ME) and Burrola fouled out to third
base.
The Monks threatened again in the second inning as
sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) singled to
center field and was advanced to second and third on sacrifices by
senior captain Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) and
sophomore Deb Drown (Gorham, ME), but junior
Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) grounded out to
second for the third out.
Albert singled again in the third, but the Huskies
finished the inning plating the first run of the game. USM added
two runs in a four hit sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Farrell singled to right field in the seventh but
the Huskies closed out the inning with a strike out, a fly out and
handled a line shot to first base by junior Amanda
Roy (Winslow, ME).
With the loss, junior Colleen
Delahanty (Warren, ME) is 3-5 on the season and the Monks
are at 6-10. Huskie pitcher Bree Loon improves to 5-2 and USM is
8-8.
