Monks Hold Sharks at Bay, Win 3-2 in Overtime

BOSTON, MA - The Saint Joseph's Field Hockey team remained undefeated in conference play with a 3-2 overtime victory over Simmons College on Saturday afternoon. Julia Ostrowski '10 (Albany, NY) netted her fourth game-winning goal, and second in extra play, this fall off a Jillian Kimball '10 (Albany Township, ME) 6:19 into overtime to lift the Monks (13-3, 6-0 NAC) over the Sharks (4-13, 1-5).

St. Joe's outshot the hosts by a wide margin - 31-12, but Simmons keeper Jen Szkolt '10 (Bondsville, MA) kept her team in the game with nine saves. SJC goalie Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) recorded three saves in the victory.

Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgton, ME) opened the game scoring for the Monks with her 15th marker of the season off an Ostrowski helper in the 11th minute of play. Simmons midfielder Katelyn Tighe '12 (Easton, MA) knotted the game at one apiece with an unassisted goal five minutes later.

Courtney Rague '11 (Old Orchard Beach, ME) provided the Royal Blue with a 2-1 lead when she tallied her sixth goal of the year in the 19th minute of play.

The one-goal cushion held until the 62nd minute when Sharks forward Emily Sypher '10 (Orono, ME) tied the game off a Tighe dish.

The back-and-forth scoring set the stage for Ostrowski's heroics, as the senior forward from Guilderland Central High School proceeded help the Monks maintain their spotless conference record.

St. Joe's will close out the regular season, and conference, schedule on Sunday with a game at Lasell College (7-9, 3-3 NAC) slated to begin at 3:00 PM. Simmons will play host to NAC rival Husson University on Sunday at 2:00 PM.

The Monks are guaranteed a home contest in the NAC Playoffs, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday, October 31st. The semifinals will be played on Wednesday, November 4th and the championship is set for Saturday, November 7th. All games are played at the higher seed with times TBD.
