Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, FL - Saint Joseph's College (4-2) split two games on St. Patrick's Day - a convincing win over Curry, 10-3, followed by a tough 9-1 loss to Franklin & Marshall. Madylan Kluna '12 (Standish, ME) notched a career-high 13 K's with four hits and no earned runs allowed in a complete-game effort.
GAME ONE vs. Curry
Kluna set the tone for the Monks by striking out the first six batters of the game. The string was broken by Curry freshman Megan Flaherty's single to lead off the top of the third. Three St. Joe's errors led to two runs for the Colonels before Kluna got Janellee Mayo to strike out to end the inning.
The Monks responded immediately with two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run single by Connie Grovo '14 (Limington, ME). Kluna blanked Curry in the top of the 4th and the SJC bats came alive in the bottom-half, scoring five runs on three hits. Jill Howard '14 (Rochester, NH) broke the tie with an RBI single, plating Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME). Heather Tripp '13 (Lovell, ME) knocked in Samantha Gray '12 (Yarmouth, ME) with a two-out single that pushed the Royal Blue to a 7-2 lead.
St. Joe's would add three more runs and Kluna would allow only one more run en route to a 10-3 victory. Kluna struck out Samantha Scanlon to end the game and record her career-best 13th punch-out.
GAME TWO vs. Franklin & Marshall
The Monks committed six errors which led to three unearned runs in the loss to the Diplomats. Kiera Walsh '11 (Benton, ME) started in the circle and was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits over 5.1 innings. She walked two and struck out two, sliding her record to 1-1 on the season.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the 1st, St. Joe's evened the score when Emily Leverone '11 (Hampton, NH) belted her first home run of the season, a solo shot. The blast was the only offensive production the Monks would muster in the loss. In fact, St. Joe's would register just one more hit – a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth by Katelyn Call '12 (Portland, ME/McAuley) – for the duration of the contest.
The Monks were shut down by F&M hurler Nicole Casey, who went the distance allowing just the one run on two hits while walking two and striking out two. For St. Joe's, Kayla Vannah '12 (Waldoboro, ME) was serviceable in her 1 2/3 innings of relief giving up just two hits, one run (earned), two walks, and one strikeout to drop her ERA to 2.42 on the year.
