Saint Joseph's Tops Thomas College, 2-0

Box Score

WATERVILLE, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (9-1, 3-0 GNAC) extended its winning streak to seven games with a 2-0 triumph over Thomas College (4-9, 1-1 NAC) on Wednesday evening.

The Monks kicked off the scoring with a goal on a penalty corner just 3:05 after the opening whistle, as senior Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) potted her sixth marker of the season off a Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) pass to provide the Royal Blue with an early advantage.

As it played out, the Hendrix goal would have been enough, but the Monks managed to bookend the first half with a last-minute marker, as sophomore Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) notched her fifth tally of the year on a penalty corner injected by junior Amanda Celata (Dedham, Mass.) to make it a 2-0 game.

The second stanza featured a decidedly defensive tone, with neither team creating much in the offensive zone. The Terriers produced a flurry of chances in the closing minute, as the hosts were credited with a penalty corner and mustered three shots in a matter of 12 seconds, but Saint Joseph's sophomore keeper Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) came up with a save, another attempt was blocked, and the final bid sailed wide.

Overall, Saint Joseph's posted a 12-5 lead in shots with an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners in the victory. Astbury made one save to claim her third shutout of the season while Thomas netminder Abbie Charrier (Waldo, Maine) totaled five saves in a losing effort.

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 17-9 all-time versus Thomas College and has now defeated the Terriers in nine-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2007 season.

Both teams face conference foes on Saturday, when Saint Joseph's hosts Mount Ida College at 12:00 PM and Thomas travels to Colby-Sawyer College for a 1:00 PM start.
