Box Score STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (7-4, 3-1 GNAC) ended a three-game skid with a 1-0 victory over Thomas College (6-6, 2-0 NAC) at Mercy Field on Tuesday afternoon.
THE LEAD
After an essentially uneventful first half, the Monks flipped the switch in the second stanza and finally solved Thomas keeper Abbie Charrer (Waldo, Maine) in the 40th minute, when sophomore Bailey Cutler (Lisbon Falls, Maine) netted her fourth goal of the season. The tally was the result of a well-executed penalty corner with senior Amanda Celata (Dedham, Mass.) and sophomore Hayley Winslow (Falmouth, Maine) earning assists on the play.
NOTABLES
- Junior forward Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) recorded seven shots with six on target in the narrow victory
- Senior Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) made a key defensive save on a Taylor Bergeron (Lyman, Maine) shot in the fifth minute
- Freshman Samantha Silva (Laconia, N.H.) came off the bench and provided a spark for the hosts, posting four shots on goal on the afternoon
THE KEEPERS
Freshman goalie Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) went relatively untested, making one save to record her fourth shutout of the season, for the Monks.
Charrer was extremely busy in goal for the Terriers, making a season-high 15 stops in the 1-0 setback.
TEAM TOTALS
Saint Joseph's held a 17-3 shots advantage, including a 12-1 cushion in the second half, with a 14-3 lead in penalty corners in the victory.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING
With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 18-9 in the history of the series with Thomas College and has now defeated the Terriers in 10-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2007 campaign. The Monks have also shut out the Terriers in each of the last four meetings between the in-state rivals.
The victory snaps a rare three-game losing streak for the field hockey team – a program that had not endured three straight setbacks since 2006.

Saint Joseph's will host conference-rival Johnson & Wales University (2-9, 1-2 GNAC) at 12:00 PM on Saturday. The Monks are 2-0 all-time against JWU, which began sponsoring field hockey as a varsity sport in 2013, and defeated the Wildcats, 3-1, in Providence last fall.
Thomas plays at University of Maine-Farmington on Saturday at 10:30 AM.
