Monks Slip Past Sharks, 2-1

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – In a rematch of the 2016 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Field Hockey Championship, Saint Joseph's College (9-4, 5-1 GNAC) edged Simmons College (9-5, 5-1 GNAC), 2-1, on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks scored midway through the first half when junior midfielder Kara Kelly (York, Maine) picked up a loose ball and deposited a shot inside the left post. Saint Joseph's doubled the advantage at the 52:41 mark when sophomore forward Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) corralled a rebound and fired a shot inside the left post.

The Sharks countered less than two minutes later when junior forward Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) sent the insert cross on a penalty corner to a waiting Meghan Fontaine (Westminster, Mass.) at the top of the circle. Fontaine ripped a shot that was deflected high into the air and over junior keeper Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) to make it a 2-1 game with 15:37 left.

THE KEEPERS:

Baker made one save to improve to 9-4 on the season while Simmons freshman keeper Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) posted eight stops in a losing effort.

In the closing minutes, Simmons first year defender Abigail Anderson (South Yarmouth, Mass.) tallied a pair of defensive saves, denying Pomerleau on consecutive attempts.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held a 13-5 advantage in shots with a 10-2 lead in shots on goal while Simmons maintained a 5-3 edge in penalty corners.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 17-8 all-time versus Simmons College and has now defeated the Sharks in three-consecutive meetings.
