Saint Joseph's Shuts Down Regis (Mass.), 2-0

Box Score

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (2-2, 2-0 GNAC) blanked Regis (Mass.) (2-3, 0-2 GNAC), 2-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

With plenty of scoring chances early, the Monks found the back of the cage in the 24th minute when sophomore Libby Pomerleau (Saco, Maine) netted the first-ever field hockey goal, off a corner, at the Monks' new turf complex. The 1-0 edge remained until senior Hayley Winslow (Falmouth, Maine) potted her second goal of the year, off another corner and a Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) pass, at the 42:18 mark.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's junior Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) was rarely tested with just one save in her 15th career shutout, but the stop was an acrobatic one, as the third-year starter dove to deny an Emily McDonald (Plymouth, Mass.) shot in the 51st minute.

Pride senior netminder Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) kept her team within striking distance with a fantastic effort, turning away 10 SJC shots in a losing effort.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held considerable leads in shots (14-2), shots on goal (12-1), and penalty corners (21-3) in the victory.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-7 in the history of the series with Regis (Mass.), an institution that joined the GNAC this fall after playing in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) since 2011.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's travels to New Jersey to face off against Kean University Sunday in an 11:00 AM start while Regis is off until next Saturday when they host Simmons College at 11:00 AM.
