St. Joe's Suffers Losses to U Chicago and Washington College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (1-5) lost to University of Chicago, 6-4, and Washington College, 12-0 (5 inn.), in THE Spring Games softball action on Tuesday afternoon.

U. CHICAGO 6, SAINT JOSEPH'S 4

The Monks struck first with a run in the opening frame, when junior Mollie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine) led off with a triple to center field and scored on an infield groundout off the bat of classmate Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, Maine).

The 1-0 advantage was short-lived however, as the Maroons plated three runs without a hit in the bottom of the first inning. Chicago made it a 6-1 game with three runs off one hit and an SJC error in the bottom of the second.

Saint Joseph's cut into the deficit with three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth, when Foley knocked in a run with a groundout to third base and sophomore Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, Maine) launched a two-run home run well beyond the left field fence to make it a 6-4 game.

The Monks had the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh but were unable to capitalize.

Verreault was 3-3 with two runs and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle and Bouchard was 2-3 with her first NCAA home run and two RBI.

Sophomore Miranda Northrup (Whitefield, Maine) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) off two walks, a hit batsman, and two wild pitches in the first inning. Senior Lydia Goodnough (Kennebunkport, Maine) pitched very well in relief and allowed one earned run on two hits with five strikeouts in six innings.

WASHINGTON COLLEGE 12, SAINT JOSEPH'S 0:

The Monks were unable to generate any offense in the closing contest and were held to one hit – a Bouchard single in the fourth inning – in a lopsided loss.

Junior starting pitcher Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, Maine) took the loss after giving up nine runs (four earned) on seven hits and five walks in three innings. Freshman Alyssa Ladd (Brooksville, Maine) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks in two innings.
