Box Score STANDISH, ME – Freshman forward Abby Young (North Yarmouth, ME) scored a game-high 13 and Megan McDevitt '12 (Cumberland, ME) added 11 to help Saint Joseph's (5-3) topple Maine-Farmington (1-5), 62-32, in a non-conference women's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Wednesday night.
Young and Alyssa Grigware '13 (Biddeford, ME), who added a career-high 10 points off a 4-4 effort from the floor, spearheaded an SJC bench that scored 35 points in the lopsided win. The Monks led wire-to-wire in what was their third consecutive victory of the 2010-11 campaign.
Allie Parent '12 (Camden, ME) netted six points, six assists, eight boards and three steals and Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME) grabbed a game-high 12 caroms for the Monks. Freshman point guard Mackenzie Dufour (Augusta, ME) chipped in with six assists.
Jillian Ross '11 (Belfast, ME) led the Beavers with eight points and nine rebounds and Ashley Busque '11 (Belgrade, ME) added six points in the losing effort.
Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes, as Geel and Dufour hit jumpers and McDevitt propelled a three to provide the Royal Blue with an early lead. Young connected for two field goals to push the Monks to an 11-2 advantage with 9:35 remaining in the first half.
Farmington was able to climb back into the game with the help of the long ball, as Busque drained a pair of three-pointers in the next three minutes to lead the Beavers during a 9-4 outbreak, which cut the SJC cushion to 15-11 with 7:17 left in the opening period.
Saint Joseph's by eight, 22-14, with 5:34 on the first-half clock and the Monks went on to extend their cushion to 15 points with the assistance of four trifectas over the following four minutes. Former Greely High School standouts McDevitt and Young both connected on a pair of three-pointers to put the Monks up by 15, 33-18, with 1:27 before the intermission.
St. Joe's carried a 33-19 lead into halftime and shot 38.7% (12-31) from the floor, 55.6% (5-9) from three-point range, and 100% (4-4) from the FT line in the opening stanza. Farmington countered by shooting 23.1% (6-26) overall, 20% (2-10) from downtown, and 41.7% (5-12) from the charity stripe.
As it turned out, the Monks would hold on to lead by at least 14 points for the remainder of the game. St. Joe's, which led 47-30 with 10:16 left, outscored the Beavers by a 15-2 margin over the last 10 minutes of play and seven unanswered points to close out the triumph.
A bucket by Lindsay Moore '14 (Somersworth, NH) with 56 seconds left in the game boosted the Monks to their largest lead of the game, 62-32, which was the final score of the contest.
Saint Joseph's shot 41.7% (25-60) overall, 38.5% (5-13) from three-point land, and 87.5% (7-8) from the FT line en route to the victory. Farmington shot 22.6% (12-53) from the field, 15.8% (3-19) from beyond the arc, and 41.7% (5-12) from the line in the loss.
The Monks out-rebounded the Beavers by a 46-33 margin and grabbed 16 offensive caroms on the night. St. Joe's also doled out a season-high 20 assists on 25 field goals in the blowout win.
With the win, St. Joe's improves to 35-29 (.547) against Maine-Farmington in the history of the series. The victory snaps a six-game losing streak to the Beavers, a slump that dates back to the 2001-02 season.
Saint Joseph's will host another in-state rival – Husson University - on Saturday at 1:00 PM. UMF will host University of New England on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
