Box Score GORHAM, ME – Saint Joseph's (1-0) defeated
University of Southern Maine (0-1), 3-1, in the 2010 volleyball
opener for both teams at Hill Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. Sarah Hawkes '13 (Pownal, ME) registered a match-high 11 kills for
the Monks, who rallied to win three straight after dropping the
first game to the Huskies.
USM topped St. Joe's, 25-16, in the first game, but St.
Joe's proceeded to gain 25-15, 25-19 and 25-22 wins to earn
the 3-1 victory. Sarah Coffey '14 (Hanover, MA) notched eight
kills and three aces for the victors, while Kiah Begley '13
(Berwick, ME/St. Thomas Aquinas) dealt out a match-best 17 assists
for the Monks. Hawkes added three aces, four digs and three blocks
to her stat line in the win.
Huskies senior Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, NH) led the hosts
with seven kills, while Meghan Rumore '14 (Manchester, NH)
and Hallie Noah '12 (Anchorage, AK) both chipped in with two
solo blocks in the losing effort.
Saint Joseph's will play Wentworth College on Saturday at
11:00 AM in the Wheaton Invitational, while USM is set to host UNE
on Friday at 7:00 PM.
