Nor'easters Storm Past Monks, 3-0

STANDISH, Maine – University of New England (6-11, 2-1 CCC) shut out Saint Joseph's College (5-13, 2-3 GNAC), 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-14), in a non-conference volleyball match at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening.

The Nor'easters were in command from the start, particularly on the attack as the visitors recorded a solid .235 kill rate with 41 kills and just 17 errors in 102 opportunities. The Monks countered with equal numbers in kills and errors (11) in 91 attempts in the losing effort.

A trio of UNE players accounted 31 of the Nor'easters' kills, with senior Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) notching a match-high 12 kills, sophomore Grayson Szczepaniak (Lakewood, Ohio) tallying 11 and freshman Courtney Lambrese (Cranston, R.I.) chipping in with eight on the evening. Janelle completed a double-double performance with 16 digs while first-year Brooke Gibbons (Miami, Fla.) contributed 35 assists for the visitors.

Freshman Jordynne Copp (Cumberland, Maine) paced the Monks with four kills while sophomore Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) tallied three kills, two service aces and a team-best 13 digs in the setback. Junior Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, N.H.) added three kills with a pair of aces and two block solos, freshman Samantha Robinson (Gorham, Maine) totaled 10 digs and junior Abbie McPhee (Epping, N.H.) chimed in with eight assists and four digs in a losing effort.

With the result, University of New England runs its winning streak versus Saint Joseph's to 28 games as the Monks have not tipped the Nor'easters since September 14th, 1998.

Saint Joseph's returns to the court tomorrow evening when the Royal Blue play host to Maine Maritime Academy in a 6:00 PM start while UNE hosts Southern Maine and Maine Maritime in a non-conference tri-match on Saturday.
