Monks Slip Past Beavers, 62-54

FARMINGTON, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (4-1) defeated University of Maine-Farmington (1-3), 62-54, in a non-conference women's basketball contest on Monday night.

THE LEAD

The Monks trailed at halftime, 28-25, but outscored the Beavers by a 22-15 margin in the third quarter en route to the eight-point triumph. Senior center Morgan Cahill (Yarmouth, Maine) netted 10 of her game-high 20 points in the third frame and added eight boards and five blocked shots to her impressive stat line in the victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S

  • Sophomore guard Emily Quirion (Augusta, Maine) scored 14 points with three assists
  • Freshman guard Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) added 10 points, five boards, five assists and five steals
  • Junior guard Abbie Eastman (Norway, Maine) contributed eight points and seven caroms

LEADERS – MAINE-FARMINGTON

  • Senior Meghan Smith (Boothbay, Maine) posted a double-double with 16 points and 22 rebounds – including 10 on the offensive end – on the evening
  • Kennadi Grover (Cushing, Maine) added 15 points and five rebounds
  • Bridget Humphrey chipped in with five points and seven boards

NOTEWORTHY

Saint Joseph's scored 15 points off 26 Maine-Farmington turnovers and committed a season-low 16 turnovers in the victory.

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's shot 32.4% (22-68) from the field, 33.3% (6-18) from downtown, and 57.1% (12-21) from the free throw line while Maine-Farmington countered with shooting efforts of 36.4% (20-55), 16.7% (2-12) and 60% (12-20) from the floor, three-point range and charity stripe, respectively, on the evening.

St. Joe's held advantages in assists (14-10) and points off turnovers (15-9) while UMF owned the lead in rebounds (47-44), second-chance points (14-11), points in the paint (30-24) and bench points (13-6) in the losing effort.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

Saint Joseph's is now 40-29 all-time versus Maine-Farmington and has now defeated the Beavers in five-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2010-11 season.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's will host University of Southern Maine in the Annual Costello Cup series matchup on Sunday at 5:30 PM. Presented annually to the winner of the contest between the rivals, the Costello Cup honors the late Dr. Richard "Doc" Costello, former USM Athletic Director and long-time basketball coach. The Huskies own a 21-4 record versus the Monks during the Cup matchup, which began during the 1989-90 campaign.

Maine-Farmington starts conference play on Monday, December 1 with a trip to Husson.
