#17/22 Monks Open Home Slate with 87-50 Win Over Terriers

STANDISH, Maine - #17/22 Saint Joseph's College (3-0) routed Thomas College (0-3), 87-50, in a non-conference women's basketball game at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night. The contest was the 2018-19 home opener for the Monks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's, ranked 17th and 22nd in the latest D3hoops.com and WBCA national polls, respectively, opened the night on a scoring run, as a layup by junior forward Lexi L'Heureu-Carland (Bridgton, Maine) lifted the hosts to a 16-3 lead with 3:59 remaining in the first quarter. 

The Monks, who have now won 38-consecutive home games, led 23-7 after the first quarter and managed to maintain a double-digit cushion for the remainder of the evening.

MILESTONE MET:

With 22 points in tonight's triumph, senior Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) hit the 1,500 career-point mark on the button, becoming just the sixth player in program history to reach the milestone. She entered the home opener with 1,478 points.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks scored 32 points off 25 Terrier turnovers and coughed up the ball just 11 times in the one-sided victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • McNamara led all players with 22 points and added five assists and four steals
  • Senior Hannah Marks (Waldoboro, Maine) was 4-5 from three-point distance and tallied 16 points, three boards, two assists, and a pair of steals
  • Senior Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) added 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals
  • Senior Julia Champagne (Brunswick, Maine) chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds
  • Freshman Page Brown (Boothbay, Maine) came off the bench to score eight points with the help of a 4-4 free-throw shooting performance

LEADERS – THOMAS:

  • Junior Karli Stubbs (Auburn, Maine) notched eight points, six boards, and two steals
  • Junior Malorie Weaver (Palermo, Maine) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and scored seven points
  • Sophomore Addie Brinkman (Farmington, Maine) tallied eight points and four rebounds
  • Senior Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine) contributed seven points, four boards, two assists, and a pair of blocked shots

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 59-5 in the history of the series with Thomas College and has defeated the Terriers in 10-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2007-08 campaign.
