Monks Top Husson, Improve to 9-0

BANGOR, Maine – The #12/16 Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (9-0) remained undefeated with a 60-49 victory at Husson University (3-3) on Saturday afternoon. The Monks are 9-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season and fourth time in team history. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's, ranked 12th and 16th in this week's D3hoops.com and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) national polls, respectively, held a 28-24 lead at the half and put the game away with a dominant third quarter. The Monks shot 66.7% (10-15) from the floor en route to outscoring the Eagles by a 23-10 margin and attaining a 51-34 cushion through three frames.

The Monks led by a game-high 20 points (54-34) after senior guard Hannah Marks (Waldoboro, Maine) drilled a three-pointer 12 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Eagles methodically chipped away at the deficit and cut the SJC lead down to 60-48 with 1:14 left but were limited to just one free throw in the last 74 seconds of play.

STATS OF THE GAME:

St. Joe's posted a 22-12 lead in points in the paint and dealt 16 assists on 22 field goals in the victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Marks was 4-6 from three-point range with 14 points, two assists, two steals, and two rebounds
  • Senior forward Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) netted 13 points with nine rebounds
  • Senior guard Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 assists
  • Senior guard Julia Champagne (Brunswick, Maine) added seven points with five rebounds and two assists
  • Junior guard Julia Quinn (Fryeburg, Maine) came off the bench to score six points

LEADERS – HUSSON:

  • Kenzie Worcester scored a game-high 20 points with four steals, three assists, and two rebounds
  • Sami Ireland added eight points and seven rebounds

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 41-32 all-time versus Husson University.
