Saint Joseph's Squashes Suffolk, 73-45

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (20-1, 12-0 GNAC) routed Suffolk University (15-6, 9-3 GNAC), 73-45, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.

With the victory, the Monks extend their program-record winning streak to 20 games, the third-longest active streak in NCAA DIII Women's Basketball. Saint Joseph's has also won 32-consecutive home games and 17-straight conference contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

With the help of four three-pointers in the opening five minutes, Saint Joseph's opened the game with a 14-4 run, as junior guard Julia Champagne (Brunswick, Maine) drained a three 4:35 into the first quarter to provide the hosts with a 10-point advantage.

As it played out, the Monks proceeded to lead by at least 10 points for the remainder of the evening and held a game-high 31-point (72-41) cushion when freshman Madigan Cogger (York, Maine) made a free throw with 2:53 remaining.

These two teams last met in Boston just 10 days ago, when the Monks rallied from a 16-point deficit after three quarters en route to securing an 82-79 victory.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks shot 47.4% (9-19) from three-point distance while the Rams connected on just 18.2% (4-22) of their shots from beyond the arc…Saint Joseph's tied a season-high with 27 assists…SJC posted a 26-16 points-in-the-paint advantage.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Junior guard Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) registered 17 points, nine assists, three steals, and a pair of rebounds while making five of 10 shots from three-point land
  • Junior forward Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) was 7-9 from the field with five boards and a pair of assists
  • Champagne added 12 points, five rebounds, and six assists
  • Junior guard Hannah Marks (Waldoboro, Maine) contributed eight points, three caroms, and a pair of assists
  • Senior forward Brianne Maloney (South Portland, Maine) chipped in with four points, five assists, and three rebounds

LEADERS – SUFFOLK:

  • Sophomore forward Alexis Hackett (Charlton, Mass.) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds with five points and two assists
  • Freshman forward Jordan Hipwell (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) was 4-4 from the FT line with nine points
  • Freshman guard Jenni-Rose DiCecco (Falmouth, Mass.) added nine points and three boards
  • Junior guard Marissa Gudauskas (Bolton, Conn.) came off the bench to net seven points with a pair of steals

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 12-7 in the history of the series with Suffolk University and has now defeated the Rams in five-consecutive meetings.
