McNamara Becomes SJC All-Time Leading Scorer, Monks Top Chargers, 75-52

STANDISH, Maine – #11/12 Saint Joseph's College (16-0, 4-0 GNAC) defeated Colby-Sawyer College (11-5, 3-1 GNAC), 75-52, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.

RECORD BREAKER:

With a three-point field goal at the 3:06 mark of the third quarter, senior guard Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) became the leading scorer in the 42-year history of the Saint Joseph's women's basketball program. Entering tonight's contest 17 points shy of the 1,775-point total posted by Kendra Coates '91, McNamara tied the Monks' career record when she hit a three-pointer with 6:13 left in the third frame and surpassed Coates just over three minutes later.

 Junior guard Julia Quinn (Fryeburg, Maine) was credited with an assist on McNamara's historic field goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

With the help of six early points from McNamara, the Monks jumped out to an 11-2 lead and held a 17-12 advantage heading into the second stanza. After shooting an even 50% from the floor (7-14) and three-point range (4-8) in the second quarter, St. Joe's carried a 37-22 cushion into intermission.

The Monks extended their lead to 21 points (48-27) when sophomore guard Jordan Jabar (Waterville, Maine) hit a jump shot with 5:10 left in the third frame and registered a game-high 30-point advantage when freshman Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) made a layup with 3:03 remaining in the fourth.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Saint Joseph's made 14-of-35 shots from three-point range for a 40% clip while Colby-Sawyer was just 2-for-12 (16.7%) from downtown on the evening…The Monks held a 19-4 advantage in bench points.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • McNamara led all players with 22 points and added seven assists and six rebounds
  • Senior guard Julia Champagne (Brunswick, Maine) scored 11 points with three boards
  • Senior guard Hannah Marks (Waldoboro, Maine) chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists
  • Senior forward Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) tallied eight points and eight caroms
  • Quinn came off the bench to score nine points with three three-pointers

LEADERS – COLBY-SAWYER:

  • Junior forward Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) netted 17 points with eight rebounds
  • Junior guard Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) tallied 16 points, eight assists, four rebounds, and three steals

BEYOND THE BOX:

Tonight's victory extends the Monks' home winning streak to 45 games and the team's regular-season winning streak versus GNAC opponents to 22 contests.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 6-0 all-time versus Colby-Sawyer College, which entered the GNAC prior to the start of the 2018-19 academic year. The last meeting between the Monks and Chargers took place on November 18th, 2000 when St. Joe's defeated Colby-Sawyer, 65-55, in New London, N.H.
