STANDISH, Maine – University of New England (4-1) outlasted Saint Joseph's College (1-2), 56-54, in a non-conference women's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Wednesday evening. The game was the Monks' 2019-20 home opener.

Junior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) paced the Monks with 14 points off a 6-6 free-throw shooting performance and added six assists in the setback. Sophomore guard Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) produced 10 points, senior forward Lexi L'Heureux-Carland (Bridgton, Maine) contributed nine points and seven rebounds, and Jordan Jabar (Waterville, Maine), Bri Jordan (New Gloucester, Maine), and Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) chipped in with six points apiece on the evening.

For the Nor'easters, Jocelyn Chaput (Nashua, N.H.) netted 16 points with four boards and four assists and Elyssa Nicholas (Southborough, Mass.) came off the bench to score 12 points with the help of a 3-for-3 three-point shooting effort. Sadie Nelson (Windham, Maine) added nine points and eight caroms and Abby Cavallaro (South Portland, Maine) contributed nine points in the victory.

Saint Joseph's shot 47.6% (20-42) overall but made just two of 13 attempts from beyond the arc for a 15.4% rate. University of New England shot 38.5% (10-26) from downtown.

With the loss, St. Joe's falls to 51-19 all-time versus University of New England.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, when Saint Joseph's hosts Husson University at 1:00 PM and UNE plays at Wentworth Institute at 12:00 PM.
