Deep Bench Helps Monks Top Terriers, 62-52

WATERVILLE, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (6-4) defeated Thomas College (3-8), 62-52, in a non-conference women's basketball contest on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

With the game tied at 10-apiece with five minutes left in the first quarter, sophomore guard Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) drilled a three-pointer to ignite a 22-5 run that ended with the Monks securely in the lead – 32-15 – with 1:22 left in the second stanza.

St. Joe's remained comfortably ahead for the remainder of the contest and secured a game-high 23-point cushion (48-25) when freshman Bri Jordan (Gray, Maine) netted a three with 2:10 remaining in the third quarter.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks held a 29-2 lead in bench points and made 14-of-16 shots from the free throw line for an 87.5% clip…The Terriers countered by shooting 60% (6-10) from the charity stripe.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Sophomore guard Grace Philippon (Glenburn, Maine) came off the bench to score 13 points off a 6-for-8 shooting effort with four rebounds in 19 minutes
  • Junior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) added 11 points and three boards
  • Jordan added nine points and three rebounds
  • Fillion contributed eight points, six rebounds, four steals, and three assists
  • Junior guard Jordan Jabar (Waterville, Maine) netted seven points with seven caroms and two assists
  • Senior Julia Quinn (Fryeburg, Maine) scored seven points with three boards and two assists

LEADERS – THOMAS:

  • Senior center Malorie Weaver (Palermo, Maine) tallied 20 points and six rebounds
  • Senior guard Karli Stubbs (Auburn, Maine) scored 14 points with four boards and two assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 60-5 all-time versus Thomas College and has defeated the Terriers in 11-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2007-08 season.

The Monks are off until Wednesday, January 1st when they play Roger Williams (3:00 PM) in the first of two games in the Naismith Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts. Saint Joseph's faces UMass.-Dartmouth the following day (1:00 PM).
