Eagles Shoot Past Monks, 63-57

STANDISH, Maine – Husson University (3-2) surged past Saint Joseph's College (2-2), 63-57, in a non-conference women's basketball contest at Mike McDevitt Court on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks held a 33-24 lead after senior Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) drilled a three-pointer on the hosts' first possession of the third quarter, but the Eagles rallied with an 11-2 run to knot the game at 35 apiece after Bailey Donovan made a layup with 6:26 left in the penultimate period.

The in-state rivals traded the lead five times during the remainder of the third quarter and the Monks carried a 44-43 edge going into the fourth frame.

Jayne Howe hit another three with 6:56 left in the fourth to lift the hosts to a 51-46 advantage, but the visitors put up an 11-2 burst that featured a trio of three-pointers to claim a 57-53 advantage with 2:42 left.

The Monks played solid defensively down the stretch but could not close the gap after going 1-for-9 from three-point distance in the final frame.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Husson shot 41.4% (12-29) from downtown while St. Joe's was 7-for-31 (22.6%) from three-point distance…the Eagles went 9-for-12 from the FT line – SJC countered by making two of five attempts from the charity stripe.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Junior Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds
  • Jayne Howe netted 10 points with five assists and four boards
  • Junior Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) chipped in with nine points and two assists
  • Senior Mikayla Van Zandt (Westbrook, Maine) came off the bench to net six points and pull down five caroms
  • Junior Hannah Talon (Windham, Maine) added eight points and three rebounds

LEADERS – HUSSON:

  • Junior Bailey Donovan (Island Falls, Maine) posted a double-double with 16 points with 17 rebounds
  • Vanessa Duarte scored 15 points with a pair of boards
  • Hannah Richards added 12 points and two rebounds
  • Sophia McVicar came off the bench to net nine points with five caroms

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 44-34 all-time versus Husson University.
