Saint Joseph's Wins at Norwich, 71-53

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Saint Joseph's College (10-3, 5-0 GNAC) defeated Norwich University (6-7, 2-4 GNAC), 71-53, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks kicked off the contest on a 10-0 run and led by a 23-12 margin heading into the second quarter. Junior guard Hannah Talon (Windham, Maine) helped the visitors mount the early lead by going 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the opening frame.

The quick start essentially fueled the SJC victory, as the Monks proceeded to hold a double-digit lead for all but one Norwich possession. The Royal Blue went on to claim a game-high 22-point (66-44) advantage when junior guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) made a three-pointer with 5:14 left in the fourth quarter.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks outrebounded the Cadets by a 49-28 margin and pulled down 19 offensive caroms, which led to 16 second-chance points, in the victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Senior forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) scored 15 points with eight rebounds and two assists
  • Talon netted 15 points with six boards and was 15-for-16 from the FT line, the most free throws made by an SJC player in a single game in the last 20 years (the program record for FT's made in a game is held by Sharon Rines, who hit 22 of 23 from the line versus Emmanuel on January 26th, 1993)
  • Freshman guard Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) added 12 points, six caroms, and two assists
  • Hurley chipped in with eight points, 12 rebounds, and four assists
  • Senior forward Mikayla Van Zandt (Westbrook, Maine) came off the bench to net six points with three rebounds

LEADERS – NORWICH:

  • Haley Brewster paced the Cadets with 14 points and grabbed five rebounds
  • Maren McGinn scored eight points with six boards
  • Silas Bernier added eight points and a pair of assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win Saint Joseph's improves to 16-6 all-time versus Norwich University. The Monks have now defeated the Cadets in 10-consecutive meetings, a streak that began during the 2015-16 campaign.
