Husson Defeats Saint Joseph's, 79-64

BANGOR, Maine – Husson University (2-2) topped Saint Joseph's College (2-2), 79-64, in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks faced a 31-22 deficit heading into halftime after shooting just 20.1% (6-29) from the floor in the first two quarters and trailed by a game-high 20 points (46-26) after Sofia Torres-Reyes capped a 15-4 run with a three-pointer and 4:53 remaining in the third quarter.

The SJC offense then came to life and mounted a 24-4 run, closed out by a Nina Howe (York, Maine) three, to cut the Eagles' lead to eight points (58-50) with 6:01 left in the fourth frame. The Monks were unable to sustain the late surge however, as Husson put the game away with a 9-2 outbreak to claim a 75-60 cushion with 54 seconds left to play.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Husson shot 46.8% (29-62) from the field while Saint Joseph's made 19-of-68 (27.9%) attempts from the floor…The Eagles also posted a 32-10 lead in points in the paint.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Senior guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) scored 18 points with nine rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals
  • Howe added 17 points, four rebounds, and two steals
  • Sophomore guard Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) chipped in with 11 points
  • Sophomore forward Madison Lebel (Hermon, Maine) came off the bench to score nine points and pull down nine rebounds

LEADERS – HUSSON:

  • Grad student Bailey Donovan was 11-for-12 from the floor with 27 points and 16 rebounds
  • Lauren Cook netted 17 points
  • Torres-Reyes scored 14 points with four assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss Saint Joseph's falls to 44-35 in the history of the series with Husson University.
