Monks Rally Past Eagles, 3-2

BANGOR, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (3-5) rallied from an 0-2 set deficit to defeat Husson University (0-6), 3-2 (24-26, 18-25, 25-21, 15-12), in a non-conference women's volleyball match on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After dropping the first two sets (26-24, 25-18), the Monks posted a .303 attack percentage in a 25-21 third-set triumph to keep their hopes alive. St. Joe's trailed for the better part of the frame and faced a 19-15 deficit before mounting an 8-0 run to secure a 23-20 advantage. Kills by Hanna Webster (Alvin, Texas) and Larisa Comolli (Nashua, N.H.) closed out the 25-21 set victory.

The fourth set was close early as the teams played to a 7-7 stalemate, but the Monks posted a 9-3 surge to stake a 16-10 cushion and went on to win the set by a 25-14 margin. The Eagles committed 12 attack errors (-.214 attack rate) and five service miscues in the penultimate set.

Saint Joseph's held a 9-4 lead in the fifth set, but Husson put up a fight with an 8-3 outbreak to knot the frame at 12-apiece. Comolli put the Monks back in front with a kill and the Monks benefited from a pair of Eagle attack errors to close out the five-set triumph.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in kills (41-40), assists (41-40), digs (62-54), and total blocks (7-2) while Husson posted a 13-10 lead in service aces on the evening.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Sophomore Victoria Briones (El Paso, Texas) tallied nine kills, two aces, and six digs
  • Sophomore Nadia Sixto (Chattanooga, Tenn.) notched seven kills, two aces, and seven digs
  • Webster added seven kills, two digs, and a pair of block assists
  • Junior Maggie Sylvester (Barrington, N.H.) delivered six kills, six digs, and two block assists
  • Comolli chipped in with four kills and four block assists
  • Senior Kailyn Chamberlin (Milford, N.H.) posted 21 assists and five digs
  • Senior Sam Holland (Gilmanton, N.H.) contributed 12 digs, three aces, and two assists
  • Freshman Tamya Johnson (Boston, Mass.) added 12 assists and six digs

LEADERS – HUSSON:

  • Janna Preskorn led all players with 16 kills and six service aces while notching 10 digs
  • Cheyenne Young boasted 13 kills, 17 assists, and 10 digs
  • Alyvia McIntyre added 18 assists and six digs
  • Beatrice Tursi notched four aces, 21 digs, and four assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win Saint Joseph's improves to 29-14 versus Husson University since the start of the 1988 season.

Saint Joseph's will host a GNAC tri-match tomorrow (Friday) versus Norwich University (3:00 PM) and Anna Maria College (7:00 PM). The Cadets and AMCATS will face off in the 5:00 PM time slot.
