STANDISH, Maine – Bates College (15-2) defeated Saint Joseph's College (9-7), 74-49, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Mike McDevitt Court at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening. The Bobcats have now won six consecutive games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The in-state rivals were evenly matched in the first half as the Bobcats headed into intermission with a 31-28 edge, courtesy of a Sophie Spolter (Blacklick, Ohio) three-pointer made with five seconds before the buzzer.

Bates kicked off the third quarter with a 14-5 run as the visitors held a 45-33 advantage after Sarah Hughes (Rumson, N.J.) capped the surge with a pair of freebies with 3:17 left in the penultimate period. The Monks went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the closing minute of the frame and went into the fourth trailing, 53-44.

Unfortunately for the Monks, a comeback was not in the cards as the hosts made 1-of-10 field goal attempts and were outscored by a 21-5 margin in the fourth quarter.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks shot just 24.5% (13-53) from the floor in the setback, including a 12.5% (3-24) rate in the second half…The shooting percentage was the program's lowest since the Royal Blue shot 23.6% (13-55) in a loss at Emmanuel College on February 15th, 2020.
