Monks Cruise Past Blazers, 80-57

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Senior guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) notched a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds to help Saint Joseph's College (10-7, 6-0 GNAC) defeat Elms College (9-8, 3-3 GNAC), 80-57, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The conference rivals swapped the lead several times in the early going before the Monks secured the advantage for good with a dominant 21-4 run spanning nearly seven minutes during the first and second quarters. Trailing 8-7 with 3:09 left in the first frame, sophomore Logan Brown (Brunswick, Maine) drilled a three-pointer to ignite the outburst and freshman Maddie Russell capped the surge with a layup to make it a 28-12 game with 6:51 before the break.

Saint Joseph's headed into halftime with a 46-22 cushion and Russell lifted the Royal Blue to a game-high 30-point (67-37) lead when she hit a shot from downtown with 7:51 remaining in the fourth quarter.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks held a 47-24 advantage in rebounds with a corresponding 30-14 points in the paint lead…Saint Joseph's tied a season-high by shooting 48.3% (29-60) from the floor...The Monks also shot 48.3% in a win over Regis College on December 9th.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Hurley was 5-for-10 from three-point land with 22 points, 12 boards, and three assists
  • Senior guard Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) came off the bench to contribute 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists
  • Russell added 11 points and four rebounds
  • Sophomore Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) chipped in with nine points, three caroms, and three helpers
  • Senior guard Nina Howe (York, Maine) tallied seven points, seven rebounds, five assists, and a pair of steals
  • Sophomore guard Lindsay Fiorillo (Scarborough, Maine) chimed in with seven points in six minutes off the bench

LEADERS – ELMS:

  • Rahmia Johnston scored 21 points with three rebounds and two steals
  • Soliyana Asfaw came off the bench to score 10 points with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals
  • Jade Lewis posted nine points, seven rebounds, five assists, and a pair of steals

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 5-0 all-time versus Elms College.
